The Kann Awards are online awards targeting the creative industries. With categories in art, drawing, photography and film-making, they are the only awards in the world that offer publicity in the UK’s leading contemporary art magazine.
The Awards were formed by Katy Kann, a fine artist based in Manchester, but not restricted to the North of England. Katy was born in Russia and grew up in Monaco. She moved to Manchester to study architecture, however cites fine art as her first love and has regular commissions for her work, which can be viewed here.

The Kann Awards are now in their second year, and the esteemed judges include Steven Finestone, the Photography Director on MI:4-Ghost Protocol, Michael Clayton and many other successful films. They also include Jo Volley, a practicing artist and a senior fine art lecturer at Slade School of Fine Art (UCL). Jo and Steven are joined by Kerstin Hacker, Course Leader for the BA (Hons) Photography and MA Photography at University of Cambridge, and Oran O’Reilly, a practicing artist and Senior Fine Art Lecturer and Head of Print at University of Manchester.
Says Katy: “I started painting at the age of five, and recognised from an early age that to make it in the art world requires more than just talent, it requires something that we as artists, are not normally blessed with -– a business mind.
“The Kann Awards provide entrants with the chance to have their work published, but it also provides an opportunity to showcase work in our gallery, discuss art of all types with other creative, and have it seen by our well-respected judges. It can be an amazing springboard to a wider audience.”
The winning artist can be from any of the four categories, and will win a cash prize as well as a bespoke feature in Art Magazine, with complete liberty to chose the information and images published.
Concludes Katy: “We’re really excited to see the works come in – the closing date is March and we are already getting entries from all over the world.
“I love my own art career – it’s a passion, not just a job, as any artists knows – but the Awards give me the chance to help other artists build a community and gain amazing exposure.”
